Ukulele Chords and the CAGFD System
Release 2026.02.19
Ukulele Chord Forms (CAGFD)
Guitar players have long relied on the CAGED system—a powerful way to visualize and play chords anywhere on the fretboard using five core shapes (C, A, G, E, D). The ukulele has its own equivalent: the CAGFD system. Notice that the guitar's E-form is replaced by an F-form on ukulele due to differences in tuning and string count.
StringTheoryPro's latest release (2026.02.19) brings full CAGFD support to ukulele players, letting you explore movable chord forms in the same intuitive way guitarists use CAGED.
What is a Chord Form?
A chord form (or chord shape) is a movable finger pattern based on an open chord that can be shifted up and down the fretboard to produce different chords while keeping the same shape.
For example, the standard open C chord on ukulele can be slid up two frets to become a D chord, up four frets for an E chord, and so on. The CAGFD system organizes these shapes into five repeatable forms named after the open chords: C, A, G, F, D.
Why Learn the CAGFD System (Ukulele's Answer to CAGED)?
The beauty of CAGFD (just like CAGED on guitar) is simplicity: you only need to master five core shapes to unlock virtually any chord anywhere on the neck.
Once you know them:
You can play any major, minor, or diminished chord in multiple positions.
You gain better fretboard visualization.
Chord changes become smoother, especially in keys that don't favor open-position voicings.
It opens the door to more advanced playing, like chord melody, improvisation, and connecting chords to scales.
Using CAGFD in StringTheoryPro
We've built CAGFD chord forms directly into the app. Whenever a chord diagram appears and you're in Ukulele mode, you'll see the CAGFD options automatically—no extra setup needed. (Switch to Guitar mode, and it seamlessly reverts to classic CAGED forms.)
Simply select a chord, then toggle through the available CAGFD shapes to find the voicing that best fits your song, hand position, or creative needs.
Ukulele Chord Fingerings
This release adds complete fingerings for all five CAGFD shapes across:
Major chords
Minor chords
Diminished chords
Whether you're building barre chords, partial voicings, or exploring inversions, these fingerings make it easy to apply the system right away.
